Biography: Walter “Shorty” Blankenship, 88, of Bucyrus passed away on Tuesday July 8, 2014 at Mill Creek in Galion at 3:25 pm. Walter was born July 12, 1925 in Marion to the late Clyde and Dena Adeline (Withrow) Blankenship. He was married Nov. 28, 1942 to Annabell (Hull) who preceded him in death on June 22, 2005. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by son Walter Jr., grandsons David Blankenship and Rick Banks, 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
Walter is survived by daughter Nancy ( David ) Banks of Erie PA; son David (Debbie) Blankenship of Shiloh; daughter in law Carol Blankenship of Bucyrus; 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and his special friend and traveling companion Katie Burling of Bucyrus.
Walter retired from Galion Iron Works-Dresser after 32 years. He was a WWII Navy Veteran, U.S. Seaman First Class. Walter served on an LCT and participated in the Invasion of Normandy. He was a Life Member of the VFW 1078 and of the Bucyrus Moose Lodge #669.
Graveside Services will be held on Saturday at 1:00 pm in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or Mooseheart through the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home and expressions of sympathy can be left at munzpirnstill.com
