Samuel Powell

Biography:  A. Samuel Powell, 73 of Bucyrus passed away on Tuesday May 7, 2013 in Bucyrus Community Hospital following a brief illness.  Sam was born July 30, 1939 in Dover, OH to the late Oliver and Bertha (Walter) Powell.  He was married August 5, 1959 to Jo Ann (Strauch) Powell who survives.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Michael and Jeffrey Powell.
 
Sam is also survived by children Theodore Powell of Bucyrus; Michael (Luellen) Young, Florida; Thomas Young, Pataskala; Joyce (Ken) Gortz, Crestline; grandchildren Erin Briggs, Christopher Young, Adam Knapp, Brian (Kayla) Knapp; great grandchild Cole Young; brother Philip (Marjorie) Powell, Bucyrus; sisters Mary (Jack) Mikusa, ILL and Vera (Arden) Leonhardt, Bucyrus; brother in law James (Janet) Strauch, Bucyrus; family friend Mayra Moya, Bucyrus as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Sam trained and raised horses in Bucyrus for Ludwig Nestle before opening his own stables at the fairgrounds.  For many years Sam and his wife Jo Ann operated the stables in Bucyrus and Sam trained and drove harness horses as well as did blacksmithing.  After closing the stable in Bucyrus, Sam and Jo Ann trained in Florida during the winters.  He was a longtime member of the U.S.T.A.  For the last 15 years Sam has worked at WalMart.  Sam also enjoyed gardening and searching for golf balls in his spare time.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am in the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home, burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday where the family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 pm and also one hour prior to the services on Saturday. The family suggests memorials be made to the Am.
