Biography: Martha E. Leuthold, 91, of rural Bucyrus passed away on Saturday March 15, 2014 at home. She was born January 27, 1923 in Lykens Twp. to the late Mervin D. and Naomi R. (Hoss) Brown. On Sept. 18, 1943 she married Albert F. Leuthold and they celebrated 60 years of marriage prior to his death on June 5, 2004. In addition to her parents and husband, Martha was preceded in death by sister Lula Hawk and her husband Kenneth; brother in law James Morton; and infant sister Mary Leona.
Martha is survived by daughter Sandra and husband Frank Snyder of Celina; son Michael and wife Barbara Leuthold of Bloomville; six grandchildren Nathan (Sabrina) Leuthold, Amy (Ryan) Hughes, Carmon (Adam) Walter, Jason Snyder, Ryan (Lisa) Snyder, and Aaron Snyder; six great grandchildren, Noah, Christian, and Olivia Leuthold, Connor Hartline and Kennedie Hughes, and Riley Snyder; two sisters, Ruth (Carl) Cotsamire and Donna Morton; one brother Richard (Joyce) Brown; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Leuthold was one of eleven graduates of the 1941 Class of Chatfield High School, which had the first driver’s education class in a public school in the State of Ohio. After graduation she attended Marion Business School and then worked as a secretary at Commercial Steel Castings in Marion.
Martha’s primary vocation was as a farmer’s wife and mother on their Just-A-Mere Farm, but she also held short jobs at Nickel’s bakery, the hospital, cook at the Sheriff’s office, and assisted Albert as custodian of the former Epworth United Methodist Church for many years. Active at Epworth UM Church, Martha belonged to the Mary & Martha Class, the United Methodist Women, and was Sunday School Secretary for many years.
Martha was noted for having a flock of chickens for over 60 years, selling the brown eggs, and the homemade angel food cakes which were prized by those lucky to receive one (and there were many). She enjoyed cooking for family, friends, and farm hands; her Sunday specialty being beef roast with gravy and real mashed potatoes. Martha and her family always attended, and sometimes hosted the annual family reunions, supplying the much anticipated homemade lemonade for the Leuthold gathering. Out of town friends and family were always welcome to visit or stay at their home.
