Biography: Jerry L. Swain, 73 of Bucyrus died on Wednesday July 24, 2013 in Bucyrus Community Hospital of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Jerry was born October 10, 1939 in Columbus, OH to the late Arthur P. and Thelma M. (Chalfant) Swain. He was married in Canton, OH June 2, 1962 to Joan C. (Crider) Swain who survives.
Jerry is also survived by son Scott S. (Denise) Swain of Marion; daughter Hope E. (James David) Smith of Galion; sister Carol J. Carpenter of Lisbon, OH; brother Dennis R. (Sarah) Swain of Townsend, TN; along with several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Jerry was a Vietnam Veteran who proudly served in the Army from 1956-1958 and the Navy from 1958-1962. He attended McKinley H.S. in Canton and was employed by Pennsylvania Railroad/ConRail for 32 years as well as Amtrak. Mr. Swain recently received his 50 years award from the United Transportation Union. Jerry moved to Bucyrus in June of 1973 and was a member of the National American Legion; Lifetime member of the Amvets Post #27; and UTU 601.
Jerry enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, reading, train collecting, attending auctions and once possessed a 1966 Chevrolet Nova Deuce Show Car, which he enjoyed showing around Ohio in the car show circuit.
Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 am in the Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease or the Veterans Organization through the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy can be left at munzpirnstill.com
