Biography: Helen E. Hieber, 94, of Bucyrus passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Carlisle Place. Helen was born February 25, 1922 in Lykens Township to Edwin and Edna (Kalb) Ross. She was married July 24, 1943 to Chester Arlo Hieber who preceded her in death on February 14, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law Harold and Dorothy Ross, daughter Sandra Kay Christopher, and brother-in-law Raymond Lust.
Helen is survived by her sister Marjorie Lust of Lykens Township, son Gene Hieber of Brokensword, daughter and son-in-law Debbie and Bob Downard of Green Cove Springs, FL, and son-in-law Peter Christopher of Sawyer, MI; grandchildren Todd Hieber, Dawn (Christopher) Nelson, Darren and Brent Christopher, and Lucas, Jessica, Daniel, and Emily Downard; great grandchildren Colin, Justin, and Lauren Nelson, and Gabriella, Eliana, and Sophia Downard.
Helen lived her entire life in this area and was a member of the First Alliance Church in Bucyrus. She graduated from Lykens High School in 1940 and went on to attend business school in Columbus. After marriage, she worked supporting her husband in farming, establishing the family home, and rearing their three children. In retirement years, Helen and her husband, Chester, spent 15 winters in Leesburg, FL where she was the pianist for the Holiday Travel Resort Church and choir.
Throughout her life, Helen voluntarily served in Christian and community organizations. She was a former 4-H leader, Sunday school teacher, and director of the Crawford County Homemaker Chorus. She was a member of the Lykens Community Club, the Holmes-Liberty WCTU, and a past volunteer in area nursing homes. As a talented pianist, she often provided accompaniment for various programs and events.
Helen was a loving and devoted wife, sister, mother, and grandmother whose Christian witness enriched the lives of everyone she met. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 1 PM at the First Alliance Church with Pastor Bill Strader officiating. Burial will be in the Brokensword Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the First Alliance Church on Saturday from 12 Noon to 1 PM. Memorials may be made to the First Alliance Church of Bucyrus.
