Gene S. Howell passed away on Wednesday March 22, 2023 at his home in Nevada, Ohio. Gene was born January 10, 1933 in Carrs, KY to the late Charles Wesley and Mary Maude (Cropper) Howell. He was married to his first-grade sweetheart, Bonnie Stamm Howell sixty-six years. Bonnie survives along with four sons, Stanlee B., Aaron K. (Sharon), Harold R. (Melanie), and Wesley C. Howell all of Bucyrus; five grandsons, two granddaughters, two great grandsons, six great granddaughters, as well as numerous relatives and friends who will miss him and cherish memories of the past.
In Gene's ninety years, he wore many hats. He was a tobacco/dairy farmer when called upon to serve his country. He served two years in the Army stationed at Camp Roeder, Salzberg, Austria and was a lifetime member of the AMVETS Post #27 and the American Legion Post 181. Gene retired from Galion Iron Works, the makers of road rollers and grader as a journeyman welder with twenty-two years of service. Following retirement from the Iron Works, Gene built and operated Foxfire Campground for many years.
Gene was of the Christian faith and attended Wayside Chapel. He was a boy scout leader that accompanied two troops of scouts to the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in New Mexico, he sold real estate for Century 21 and was a minuteman for the Bucyrus Fire Department.
Gene enjoyed time spent with his family, traveling, working with wood, and watching the Kentucky Wildcats basketball games.
Gene was from a large loving family and was preceded in death by ten siblings, Oleta Polley, Roy Howell, Doris Mackey, Warner Howell, Beatrice Vergne, Alice Howell, Harry Howell, Bernard Howell, Betty Barrett and Fern Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home in Bucyrus on Saturday, 3/25/23 from 3:00-5:00 pm. On Sunday, 3/26/23, the family will receive friends at the Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg, Kentucky from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm at which time a service will be held and burial will follow in Lewis County Memory Gardens. The family suggests memorials be made to Wayside Chapel, 2341 Kerstetter Rd., Bucyrus, Ohio or to Avita Hospice. Expressions of sympathy can be left at www.munzpirnstill.com
