Biography: Ethel Marie (Ruff) Wilson, 88, of Bucyrus, Ohio passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Maplecrest Assisted Living, due to complications of a recent stroke. Ethel was born in Evansville, Indiana on May 26, 1926 to the late Henry William and Eleanor Maria (Horstmann) Ruff.
Ethel attended Evansville Lutheran School and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in 1939. She was a 1943 graduate of Central High School in Evansville. On Sept. 6, 1947, she married Richard Kenley Wilson, and they moved their family to Bucyrus in 1958. Ethel was a 55 year member of Good Hope Lutheran Church and was active in many facets of church life. She served on church council for many years, held several offices in the WELCA, presented Bible studies, attended synod and national church conventions, chaired Mother-Daughter banquets, taught Sunday School and catechism, and mentored several youth in the confirmation program.
In the community, Ethel was a member of the Modern Mothers CCL, Kilbourne PTA, BCH Auxiliary Twig, American Heart Association, Bucyrus BPW, Revelers Dance Club and Cherry Tarts Red Hat Society. She managed the office while her husband, Dick, was a Jostens sales rep, and later was the receptionist for Dr. Carl Ide for 15 years. She was also the owner of Health Claims Services for many years.
Ethel and Dick enjoyed spending time with family, neighbors and friends around their backyard pool, especially on summer holidays, for many years. She was an active team mom for the Bucyrus Redman sports, and Little League baseball teams, for which her sons played. She also loved to read, bowl, play cards and was a huge fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians. One of her most memorable trips was to Oberammergau, Germany for the Passion Play presented there.
Ethel is survived by her daughter Cynthia (Dean) Campbell of Liberty Twp, Ohio, and her son David of Corpus Christi, Texas, granddaughters Jillian Campbell, Jordan Wilson and Joanna (Jeff) Allen, grandsons Andrew Campbell and Jacob Wilson, great grandsons Darrian Gulleff, Malachi Campbell, Gideon Allen and Gabriel Allen, and brother Jimmy (Vivian) Ruff. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard in 1973, son Richard (Francoise Patier) in 2000, grandson Alexander (Elisa) in 2000, and brothers Raymond Ruff and Donald Ruff in 1998.
Visitation for Ethel Wilson will be held at Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home on Monday, January 26thfrom 4-7 PM. Pastor David Bliss will conduct funeral services at Good Hope Lutheran Church on Tuesday, January 27th at 11 AM, with visitation one hour before the service begins. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Evansville, Indiana on Wednesday, January 28th at 1 PM. The family suggests memorial contributions to Maplecrest Assisted Living, Good Hope Radio or Steeple Fund, or any charity of the donor’s choice.
