Biography: Captain Harold E. Steiger, 86 of Bucyrus and Ft. Myers, FL passed away on Sunday October 28, 2018 at Heartland of Bucyrus. Harold was born May 20, 1932 in Liberty Twp., Crawford County to the late Henry and Martha (Long) Steiger. He was married Sept. 30, 1953 to Carol June (Althouse) Steiger who survives along with one daughter Joy Elaine (Larry) Moore of Bucyrus. He was preceded in death by one sister Virginia Poland and her husband Martin of Norwalk; as well as brother in laws Harold Burgin and Larry Althouse.
Harold was a graduate of Sulphur Springs H.S. in 1950 and was proud of being able to run in the State track meet his senior year. He also received schooling at Northwestern Univ., Kent State, and Heidelberg College.
Harold was a U.S. Army Veteran serving with the 6th Army at Ft. Oro California and Ft. Lewis Washington. His Army assignment was Managing the reception center for all troops going to the Far East.
In 1958 Harold graduated from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy. He served at Toledo, Medina, Greenville, Norwalk, Springfield, Marion, and Piqua. Harold completed his career at Bucyrus as the Captain in charge of Patrol District Two, retiring in 1985. What Harold really liked was his job. He loved the Highway Patrol and could not remember a day that he didn’t want to go to work.
Following retirement Harold and June moved to Florida. They spent many wonderful winters with their friends at Swan Lake Village in North Fort Myers. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed fishing and watching all sporting events and was a fan of NASCAR and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Harold was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church in Cape Coral, FL.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday at 4:00 pm with Rev.Don Neuman officiating in the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm.
