Biography: Betty Mae Smith, 87, formerly of Nevada and a resident of Upper Sandusky for the past several years, entered Heaven on Tuesday May 17, 2016 at the Wyandot County Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Betty was born on December. 21, 1928 in Crawford County to the late Arthur Russell and Helen (Ellis) Nickler. She was married October 24, 1947 to the late James R. Smith Sr. who preceded her in death on March 22, 1995. She was also preceded in by her daughter Malinda Cady, son in law, Michael Cady, granddaughter, Abigail (Abbey) Snyder, sister, Donna M. Eaton, and son in law, Michael England.
Betty is survived by her children, Patricia (Morris) Failor of Nevada, Regina L. (Terry) Snyder of New Winchester, James R. (Lois) Smith Jr. of Alabama, and Beth England of Battle Creek, Michigan, 13 grandchildren, and 34 great grandchildren.
Betty attended Bucyrus Schools and had worked at Woolworths, Moore Shoe Store, Millington’s, Maplecrest, Heartland, and the Fairhaven home. She was a member of Wayside Chapel where she served with her husband as Wayside Christian School janitors, in the bus ministry, and as teen workers. She was probably best known as the Wayside camp cook for many years. She enjoyed knitting, quilting, crocheting, and embroidery. She favored many family and friends with her afghans and doilies.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 10:00 am in the Wayside Chapel with Rev. Carl Smith and Rev. Timothy Compton officiating, burial will follow in Nevada Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home on Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 pm. The family suggests memorials be made to Gideon’s International.
