Biography: Alta E. Kirgis, 88, of rural Lykens passed away on Monday April 28, 2014 at Orchard Park in Bucyrus following a lengthy illness. Alta was born April 10, 1926 in Lykens Township to the late John W. and Elnora (Brause) Ross. Alta lived her entire life in the farm house where she was born. She was married Oct. 25, 1947 to Willard Kirgis who preceded her in death on June 27, 1973. Alta was also preceded in death by her son Keith Kirgis.
Alta is survived by children Douglas (Karen) Kirgis of Layton, Utah; Jodene Chitwood of Lucas; and Brad (Debbie) Kirgis of Lykens; grandchildren, Christina (Sean) Oppenheimer; Leah Kirgis; Brian (Erin) Kirgis; Kurt and Jenae Fankhauser; Shawna Kirgis; Brenton and Callan Kirgis; 4 great grandchildren; and former daughter in law Cheryl Kitchin of Bucyrus.
Alta graduated from Lykens H.S. in 1944 and attended Marion Business College. She was a homemaker and worked at C.E. White in New Washington. Alta was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church and the Women’s Circle.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday in the Nazareth Lutheran Church with Pastor Tom Pairan officiating, burial will follow in Brokensword Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. The family suggests memorials be made to Heartland Hospice or the Church and expressions of sympathy can be left at munzpirnstill.com
